European Campus of Intercultural Perspectives
26 - 30 August 2024

Training in intercultural competence for students

Join us at the University of Münster and experience the European Campus of Intercultural Perspectives!
Become a member of a multicultural student team and investigate aspects of intercultural competence.

What is the summer school all about?

Contact with people from other cultures at work and in everyday life is a common fact nowadays, a consequence of increasing globalisation and migration. Therefore, the skills of intercultural communication have become essential for all people involved, be it in working life abroad or in multicultural teams in one’s home country.

  • But how does intercultural communication work?
  • What options are there to deal with intercultural misunderstandings?
  • How does conflict resolution work?
  • What is a culture shock?
  • How does one handle racism and discrimination?
  • And what do we understand under postcolonial responsibility?

These questions and others will be addressed in the summer school, which unites theory and practice as participants work together in a multicultural team. Students will not only engage with intercultural communication from an academic perspective, but also expand their own intercultural communication skills through practical elements. There will be some extra events for students to meet and chat as well as to explore and enjoy Münster and the university.

Preparation for the summer school

Participants are expected to complete a research assignment to prepare for the summer school. The research question is:

  • How are intercultural communication and intercultural understanding perceived in your home country? Find examples of how people deal with diversity and otherness in your culture.
  • Are there programs or projects which aim at interculturalism or multiculturalism? How are these put into practice? Support your findings by scientific work on the topic from local researchers.

Please summarize and visualize your findings. Based on your preparations, you will work on a group task as part of the course schedule on-site in Germany, which will be evaluated. With your research and on-site work you can earn two Credits (ECTS) and will receive a certificate after successfully completing the summer school.

The Summer School is offered by the Institute of Ethnology and the International Office of the University of Münster in cooperation with Ethnology in School and Adult Education (ESE) e.V.

We cordially invite you to participate in our one-week intensive programme on intercultural perspectives!
